Tax Code (Codice Fiscale)
What is it?
The tax code (Codice Fiscale) is an alphanumeric code issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency) to identify individuals (both Italian and foreign) in interactions with public administrations, private entities, and institutions in Italy. For individuals, the tax code is determined based on their personal data.
What is it used for?
Any administrative procedure (payment of taxes, fees, charges, etc.) or contractual activities (acceptance of inheritance, contracts with public or private entities, requests for funding, sponsorships, property rentals or leases, etc.) requires the inclusion of the tax code of the involved party.
How to apply for the tax code:
Italian citizens residing abroad can request the tax code through the consular office or directly at the Agenzia delle Entrate offices located throughout Italy, as per Article 1 of the implementing decree of May 17, 2001, No. 281.
Foreign citizens who are not residents in Italy can delegate someone specifically to submit the tax code request form directly to the Agenzia delle Entrate offices across Italy, pursuant to Article 1 of the implementing decree of May 17, 2001, No. 281. How?
- Access the Fast-it portal.
- Click on “Anagrafe Consolare e AIRE” and then on “Attribuzione Codice Fiscale” (Tax Code Issuance).
- Confirm the data and start the request process.
- Once the application has been processed by the Consulate, you will be able to independently download the certificate of tax code issuance.
If you are unable to download the certificate of tax code issuance:
- Register on the Fast-it portal or log in if you already have an active account.
- Request “Online Association” by clicking on “Anagrafe Consolare e AIRE” and then on “Visualizzare la propria scheda anagrafica” (View Your Personal Data Record).
- You will receive a confirmation email in your inbox regarding the successful association.
- Log back into the portal and download the certificate.
Adult AIRE-registered citizens who already have a tax code can directly download the certificate of tax code issuance through the Fast-it portal by accessing the relevant service and following the instructions. In this case, Consular intervention will not be required for the issuance of the certificate.
Those who wish to receive the plastic card version of the tax code must request both the tax code and the card by submitting the appropriate form along with a copy of an identity document.
In case of loss or destruction of the paper certificate or the plastic card, duplicates can be requested using the same procedure as for issuance.
Please note that this service via the Fast-it portal is not available for Italian citizens who are not registered with AIRE or for foreign citizens.
