Tax Code for foreign citizens

Tax Code

What is it?

The tax code (Codice Fiscale) is an alphanumeric code issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency) to identify individuals (both Italian and foreign) in interactions with public administrations, private entities, and institutions in Italy. For individuals, the tax code is determined based on their personal data.

What is it used for?

Any administrative procedure (payment of taxes, fees, charges, etc.) or contractual activities (acceptance of inheritance, contracts with public or private entities, requests for funding, sponsorships, property rentals or leases, etc.) requires the inclusion of the tax code of the involved party.

How to apply for the tax code:

Italian citizens residing abroad can request the tax code through the consular office or directly at the Agenzia delle Entrate offices located throughout Italy, as per Article 1 of the implementing decree of May 17, 2001, No. 281. For more information, visit the page Tax code – Ambasciata d’Italia Jerevan.

Foreign citizens who are not residents in Italy can delegate someone specifically to submit the tax code request form directly to the Agenzia delle Entrate offices across Italy, pursuant to Article 1 of the implementing decree of May 17, 2001, No. 281.

FOREIGN RESIDENTS IN ARMENIA

  1. Foreign students residing in Armenia who require a tax code for university pre-enrollment can automatically obtain it via the UNIVERSITALY Portal during the pre-enrollment application. The assignment of the tax code can be finalized at the Immigration Desk or the Police Headquarters (Questura) when applying for a residence permit, specifically for non-EU students.
  2. Foreign citizens residing in Armenia who need a tax code for property purchases or other commercial/financial activities in Italy can delegate a representative to request the tax code from the Agenzia delle Entrate on their behalf. Non-EU citizens intending to stay in Italy are assigned the tax code:
    • By the Immigration Desk present in every Prefecture, responsible for issuing the entry clearance to foreigners applying for residence permits for employment or family reunification.
    • By the Questura (Police Headquarters) for foreigners applying for other types of residence permits.

EU citizens intending to stay in Italy can request the tax code by submitting the AA4/8 form to a territorial office of the Agenzia delle Entrate.

  1. Foreign citizens residing in Armenia who need the tax code to initiate a judicial process in Italy can include a delegation to their lawyer, authorizing them to request the tax code at any Agenzia delle Entrate office.

The addresses of these offices can be found on the website www.agenziaentrate.it.

Alternatively, the tax code can be requested by the foreign citizen residing in Armenia at the Embassy only if it is necessary for online procedures and/or if the individual cannot delegate a representative to apply at the Agenzia delle Entrate. In such cases, the consular office will forward the request to the Agenzia delle Entrate in Italy.

The request for the tax code, to be submitted by completing the appropriate form, must be accompanied by a copy of an identity document and the reasons for the request.

To make an appointment and send your request, email: consolare.jerevan@esteri.it.

Documents required on the appointment day:

  • Request form and motivation letter with supporting documents.
  • Passport and a photocopy.
  • Original birth certificate with photocopy and a simple translation into Italian (it does not have to be notarized).

The tax code will only be issued in paper format. To receive a plastic card version, you will need to contact the Agenzia delle Entrate office in Italy.

The service is free and reserved for private individuals.
