Italy benefits from a positive image among the Armenian people, also because of perceived affinities, because of the Armenian peoples' interest in Italian culture, and because their enduring gratitude for the swift Italian humanitarian response on the occasion of the disastrous earthquake of 1988.
Italy has always supported Armenian wish for of closer links with European structures : it was during the Italian chair, in 2001, that Armenia became a member of the Council of Europe.
Bilateral contacts were further strengthened by the participation of President Serzh Sargsyan to the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Italian unity.
On September 18, 2013, Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian met his counterpart, Emma Bonino, in Rome, and, on July 22, 2014, Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini in Brussels.
In 2015 President Serzh Sargsyan made an official visit to Italy, accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Culture.
On November 8, 2016, Hon.Paolo Gentiloni made the first visit of an Italian Foreign Minister to the Republic of Armenia.
